The main health
benefits of oil of oregano
What is Oil of Oregano?
Oil of Oregano is an essential oil
derived from the leaves of the plant Oregano Vulgares, a
woody shrub native to the Mediterranean. The oil is
steam-distilled from fresh or dried leaves. It is very
strong and has to be diluted with virgin olive oil to
take orally. The active ingredients are Carvachol and
Quercetin.
What are the Benefits of Oil
of Oregano?
One of the main benefits of Oil of Oregano is that it
works as a natural antibiotic and is also antiviral. Let
me explain.
Let’s say you have a sore throat. Chances are good that
this is viral. Your doctor prescribes in 75 % of the
time an antibiotic which is most of the time just not
useful. Viruses do not respond to antibiotics. But Oil
of oregano will cure the job as it is both antiviral and
anti bacterial.
It is an excellent product for topical use works against
eczema and fungus. Apply it 2-3 times a day. It works as
well for pain and it is anti inflammatory. In pain
control it is as strong as Ibuprofen and morphine.
Another Oil of Oregano advantage is that it has high
levels of antioxidants, higher than vegetables or fruit.
If you have oregano in your garden add a teaspoon to
your food daily.
It works against Candida, viruses that causes shingles
and herpes, and is an decongestant. Oregano is one of
the six herbs that is rated highest in Progesteron-
binding activities. High levels of Progesteron suggest
having protective ability against the formation of
certain cancers (breast, prostate and small basal cell
lung cancer.)
The essential oil of Oregano can even kill 25 of the
most common bacteria in water if used in a dilution of
1:4000. It will sterilize water; good idea if you
travel, if you want to clean up your sewer systems or
just clean your water.
Important:
On a daily basis I see patients in the hospital who have
built up a resistance for antibiotics due to overuse.
The use of antibiotics kills the good bacteria in the
intestinal tract and make us more vulnerable for
recurrent infections. The need for alternatives is
growing. Some of these alternatives are: Olive leave
extract, Garlic and Oil of Oregano.
Research suggests that oxygen molecules react with the
Oregano oil and water in your body to create heat that
destroys germs by dehydrating them. A couple of drops
daily of Oil of Oregano boast up the immune system when
feelings of being run down occur. Research also shows
that the topical use of Oil of Oregano increases oxygen
in specific areas, as the active ingredients will be
absorbed for 90% in your body. Since Oregano stimulates
oxygen in your body and cancer does not like this, it
also might work against cancer.

Research on Oil of oregano
Preliminary research for Oregano oil supports its use
for infections. Different test-tube studies have shown
that oregano oil can inhibit or destroy many strains of
fungi, bacteria, and parasites. A handful of human and
animal studies, sponsored by an Oregano oil
manufacturer, have found similar results. Anecdotal
evidence supports its use for athlete's foot.
In an abstract in the Journal of the American College of
Nutrition that appeared last year, 18 mice were injected
with the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Three of the
six mice that received Oil of Oregano orally survived
the infection, while two of the six mice that received
the antibiotic Vancomycin died. All six of the mice that
received no treatment died within three days.
The same researchers also tested Oil of Oregano's
effects on mice that had been injected with the yeast
Candida albicans. In the study, published last year in
the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, all
six of the mice fed Oil of Oregano survived more than 30
days with no sign of Candida infection, while all six
mice that were fed just olive oil died within seven
days.
A small study published in Phytotherapy Research in 2000
examined the effects of Oil of Oregano on 11 adults with
the intestinal parasite Blastocystis hominis, which can
cause diarrhea, anal itching, and weight loss.
Participants took 600 mg of Oil of Oregano daily for six
weeks. Eight were completely free of the parasite, and
the remaining three participants had a reduction in
symptoms. Similar research in Scottsdale, Arizona and
Biotics Research Corporation of Houston, Texas point in
the same direction.
Anti-cancer
In the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, Greek
researchers showed that wild oil of oregano even has the
potential to destroy human cancer cells.
A study in the Journal of Applied Nutrition found that
Carvachol contained in a one percent concentration of
Oil of Oregano effectively killed the bacteria Candida
Albicans. One warning: Oregano is very warming " When
the plant's phenols ( a type of flavonoid) which are
rich in oxygen, hit water, they create a hydrogen ion
shift and produce heat, explains Ingram, who points out
that Oregano owes its germ fighting prowess to the heat:
"The heat reaction dehydrates germs and kills them with
no harm to the human tissues", he says, "Although it
could be uncomfortable. When applying Oil of Oregano to
sensitive areas, like the vagina or face." Oregano
contains Quercetin, which has strong antioxidant
properties and may be especially protective against
breast, ovarian and endometrial cancers.
A recent U.S. Department of Agriculture study shows that
oregano offers the most antioxidant activity of all
herbs examined: 42 times more antioxidant activity than
apples, 30 times more than potatoes and 12 times more
than oranges.
